P.E.I. Provincial Correctional Centre - SaltWire Network fileCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man co-accused of assaulting another inmate at the provincial jail has been sentenced.
On June 7, Strickland was an inmate at the Provincial Correctional Centre, said Crown attorney Lisa Goulden. On that day shortly after breakfast, the victim, James George Eliopoulos, 21, was followed into his cell by Strickland and two other inmates and assaulted. Goulden said two co-accused – Dwayne Maurice Butler, 43, and another inmate – entered the cell first and punched Eliopoulos, causing him to fall to the floor.
Butler was sentenced on Nov. 25 to five months in jail for his role in the assault on Eliopoulos. At Butler's sentencing, Crown attorney Chris White said that prior to the assault, Eliopoulos ate some of the breakfast of one of the co-accused. Strickland and a co-accused were assaulting Eliopoulos when Butler entered the cell. Butler then started assaulting Eliopoulos as well. A third co-accused has yet to enter a plea on the matter.
Judge Nancy Orr disagreed with Mullin and said that the facts in Butler's matter determined that he was not the initiator. Even so, given that Strickland's criminal record is not as extensive as Butler's, Mullin requested a sentence less than theOrr also noted that compared to Strickland, Butler's criminal record is"significantly longer" and has more convictions for violent offences.
