Jacob Squires and Special Olympics team up to launch the Ladner Source for Sports Fan of the Game Club

Jacob Squires, right, poses with Edison Murray after winning the bronze medal at the 2016 Atlantic under-13 AAA male hockey championship tournament in Charlottetown as a member of the Charlottetown Abbies. Now a member of the Charlottetown Islanders, Squires has initiated the Ladner Source for Sports Fan of the Game Club that will feature a Special Olympics P.E.I. athlete attending each home game for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.

“The program is about Jacob’s experience growing up with individuals with intellectual disabilities and a way of giving back,” said Special Olympics P.E.I. executive director Charity Sheehan. “He wanted those individuals to have an experience with the Islanders’ organization feeling great about being at a game, taking it all in and being fans of the game.“The program is about Jacob’s experience growing up with individuals with intellectual disabilities and a way of giving back.

Squires and Hulton both agree the Islanders stand to benefit from this program as much – or more – than the Special Olympians. As a result, the Islanders’ season and home opener is now scheduled for Sept. 30 against the Saint John Sea Dogs. Game time at Eastlink Centre is 7:30 p.m. Sheehan said one thing that stands out from their initial conversations was the thoughtfulness Squires gave to all aspects of the program.
