Clayton Floyd stands near a green at Lingan Golf and Country Club on Thursday. The Sydney golfer has finished second in the MacDonald Auto Group men’s club championship in three of the last four tournaments but hopes this year will be the season he breaks the trend. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — Clayton Floyd has had his fair share of success when it comes to competing in recent golf tournaments at the Lingan Golf and Country Club.
The 29-year-old finished in second place in three of the last four tournaments dating back to 2018, losing only to good friend Kevin George, who won in 2018, 2020 and 2021. The trend continued for Floyd in 2021 when he lost to George by five strokes after recording a two-day total of 144. Floyd didn’t place in the top 10 in the 2019 tournament, which was won by Tyler Syms.Floyd considers the defeats as learning experiences, which he thinks will be beneficial going into the tournament as well as moving forward in his career.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to complete the comeback, but it’s golf, you’re never out of a tournament when you’re within a few shots of the lead — I take it one shot at a time.” “We have had some great matches over the past few years in this tournament and those are great memories to have. His game has been in great shape over the past few seasons, and it’s only a matter of time before he wins this championship.”Floyd, who feels his game is right where he wants it going into the tournament, spoke highly of the George’s game.
