“They still had it where if you got on a bus, African Americans had to go sit in the back. At restaurants, you had to go in the back to order your food. Those things were quite prevalent in the south. As the 1950s progressed, Bates began working in the Alameda County Probation Department, with which he spent 35 years. The museum includes an exhibit that pays tribute to the Indian Head Rockets baseball team, for which Bates played in 1952.

“As seniors, the one demand we expect from local government is public safety. We want to feel safe in our homes. We don’t want people stealing our cars. Right now, there’s a tremendous crime spree where people are stealing catalytic converters from people’s cars. “While there, I had an opportunity to meet him face-to-face and communicate with him on various issues.
