When the Jays celebrate the historic 1992 win over the Atlanta Braves this Saturday by welcoming back many of the club’s all-time greats, the best player on that team — perhaps the most talented Jay of them all — won’t be there.

In April 2021, Roberto Alomar, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, was fired from his consulting gig in Puerto Rico and effectively banned from baseball. That likely would have meant bringing him in on Saturday controversial, even though he was the key player on the 1992 squad. The Jays took Alomar’s No. 12 off its Level of Excellence and cut ties with him at the time.
Carter caught a ball thrown by Timlin to erase Otis Nixon at first base to seal the Series win. A year later, of course, Carter hit one of the most famous home runs in baseball history as the Jays repeated as champions against the Philadelphia Phillies. “Blue Jays fans are truly the best in the game, so this is a special opportunity to return to Toronto and celebrate a historic moment, not only in baseball, but for all of Canada,” Gaston said in a release.
