Two years after suffering an on-ice heart attack that nearly cost him his life, B.C.-born hockey player Craig Cunningham is back on skates.
In Nov. 2016, the 28-year-old Trail native and former captain of the WHL’s Vancouver Giants and AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners collapsed after suffering a massive heart attack before a game against the Manitoba Moose. His heart stopped beating for 83 minutes. While a specialized procedure and advanced life-saving therapy saved his life, Cunningham would develop an infection due to circulation problems that forced the amputation of his left leg below the knee on Dec. 24, 2016.
But the former NHL centre, who played 63 NHL games with the Coyotes and Boston Bruins, refused to let his health troubles keep him from the ice. On Wednesday, Cunningham, who now works as a scout for the Arizona Coyotes organization, shared a video to Instagram taking a twirl on the ice with a special prosthetic skate.
In the inspirational video, his skating, particularly his edgework and crossovers, looks nearly game-ready. It’s a modern-day miracle on ice.Cunningham also posted a photo of the modified skate that was built to attach to his artificial leg, which allows him to do just about everything he used to, save for one small wrinkle:But some coaches don’t even want their forwards skating backwards, so Cunningham certainly shouldn’t let that one little issue keep him from a return to the game he loves.
