While the New Democrats run a campaign of alternate warnings and handouts, Kenney’s UCP trumpet an anti-Ottawa pitch list
EDMONTON — Report from the Alberta election battle zone, 10 days in: It still feels as though two completely separate wars are being fought here. The ruling New Democrats continue to run a shamelessly old-fashioned campaign of alternate warnings and handouts. It almost has the hypnotic, soothing quality of blank verse. One-two, one-two: attack Jason Kenney, announce a new program. Repeat until Election Day.
The ruling New Democrats continue to run a shamelessly old-fashioned campaign of alternate warnings and handouts The Notley years have been horrid for the Alberta private sector, and labour market recovery has been poor. If traditional pocketbook criteria applied, the NDP would be facing oblivion. But the UCP and the New Democrats actually offer similar accounts of Alberta’s fundamental trouble. Kenney has been so busy blaming Ottawa for pipeline problems, and dragging Notley to the right on oil, that he has left little room for a critique of her economic management.
Meanwhile, Kenney has an extensive and detailed anti-Ottawa pitch list, most of which amounts to expecting someone else to do something. The long-promised United Conservative referendum on “fairer” interprovincial equalization —“fairer” in this context means “less redistributive” — heads the list.
