A family photo of Jennifer Stewart, 36, who was attacked with an axe and killed on Aug. 19, 2010.Daou told the jury his confession to police in February 2013 “was not a true, remorse confession,” and that jurors should, in assessing him, put their trust in psychiatrists, not the Crown attorney.
Daou acknowledged hitting Stewart on the body and head with an axe. “He told you that he meant to kill Ms. Stewart,” Wightman said in recounting Daou’s testimony. “His intention was to kill Ms. Stewart in furtherance of his goal to become a billionaire rapper.” “We submit to you that the commission of the murder represents the pinnacle of bad acts in Mr. Daou’s mind at the time he commits the murder.”Article content
The Crown attorney conceded that Daou is now suffering from schizophrenia, and that he was diagnosed four years after Stewart’s murder. Wightman said Daou’s planning for the murder flies in the face of the suggestion he was delusional at the time of the murder or unable to appreciate the consequences of his actions.
