Four bottles to watch for in the Portugal section of the LCBO

Portuguese wines make you feel alive. The whites taste light and lively — a cold snap of flavour you want to splash in your glass all summer long. The reds are bold, complex tapestries of flavour with earthy dimensions. They work beautifully at the table and are usually quite undervalued. See for yourself. Taste some of these delicious bottles under $15 at the LCBO — starting with a new listing that offers outstanding value.

The wine’s aroma calls to mind wild blueberries and the warm, spicy scent of a cigar box. A second whiff reveals a powdery floral note. And the entry is a smooth, sweet centred wash of flavour, making it accessible and easy to enjoy while adhering to the classicism of the region. Find blueberry and blackberry, muddled and ripe, imbued with hazelnut, sun-warmed violet, leather and black olive — the latter of which persists on the finish. Just a delightfully good value bottle.

red from Lisboa . This wine has been wildly popular at the LCBO for quite some time. It’s a blend of native grape varieties that sings with sheer, vibrant black forest fruit laced with toasted tobacco and dry earth. Well-balanced and well-made, this bottle offers honest value for a seriously low price. Score: 90white , a clean, crisp wine made from the native Roupeiro and Rabo de Ovelha grapes of Portugal.

And of course, Vinho Verde is definitely having a moment. What was once a relative unknown is now what the cool kids are drinking. And a bottle to put on your radar is the — not to be confused with the slightly less premium Aveleda Fonte Vinho Verde with its almost identical label except for the name. So look for “Loureiro and Alvarinho” on the label rather than “Fonte.”is it’s drier and more complex than most Vinho Verdes on shelf. It exudes the hallmark twist of lime on the nose, yes.
