There are three things on Albertans’ minds this election: the economy, pipelines and jobs

CALGARY — In recent years, Calgary has had an uncanny ability to prove the so-called skyscraper curse true.

The economy is once again at the forefront of Calgarians’ minds, and pundits say Alberta’s largest city, marked by its empty office towers, is the critical battleground in the current provincial election. Calgary is a microcosm of Alberta’s economic downturn and has suffered through persistently high unemployment and evaporating tax revenues.

Polling numbers and the state of the economy indicate Notley will have a difficult time winning back the 15 of 26 seats her party won here in 2015. That would leave Calgary, the province’s largest city, as the queen- or kingmaker in Alberta’s 87-seat legislature on April 16, though the UCP disputes this.

“No doubt Calgary will be a major battleground April 16, as it has been particularly hard hit by the economic downturn. The economy and unemployment will definitely loom large in the election,” University of Calgary political scientist Doreen Barrie said in an email.
