BAIC is set to launch its smallest SUV, the BJ30, in South Africa later this year. The B30 will be positioned below the X55 Plus and offer both petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

Chinese automaker BAIC has officially confirmed the arrival of the BJ30 , its smallest SUV offering, in South Africa later this year. Initially announced in late 2022, the BJ30 , known as the B30 locally, will be positioned below the X55 Plus in BAIC 's South Africa n lineup. Showcased in China as the second-generation model, the B30 boasts a distinct design language, departing from the X55 Plus and the now discontinued B40 Plus.

The B30 is a compact SUV measuring 4,730mm long, 1,910mm wide, and 1,790mm tall, with a 2,820mm wheelbase. It offers a five-seater cabin and a claimed boot space of 1,496 liters with the rear seats folded. A notable feature is the ability to lower the front seats to create a flat surface resembling a bed. Powertrain options for the BJ30 include both petrol and plug-in hybrid variants. In China, it's available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 138kW and 305Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A hybrid version, designated BJ30e, combines the petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor, delivering a combined output of 246kW and 550Nm. An all-wheel-drive hybrid variant features an additional rear electric motor, boosting the system output to 301kW and 685Nm. Both hybrid models utilize a newly developed two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). BAIC has confirmed that both petrol and hybrid models will be available in South Africa. Pricing and specific details for the local market are yet to be announced.

This SUV, known as the Hilux Rangga, features two additional rows of seating behind the standard cab and boasts exterior styling that aligns with the Hilux's front-end design. While the conversion provides a spacious interior with three seats in the middle row and two in the rear, limited space for rear passengers and safety concerns due to the base vehicle's limited testing remain considerations. The Hilux Rangga is powered by either a petrol or diesel engine, with the diesel option being the more suitable choice for the added weight.
