South Africa's Parliament sport, arts and culture committee vows to continue investigating the financial practices and management of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the South African Football Association (SAFA).

CAPE TOWN - Parliament's sport, arts and culture committee has declared its intent to continue investigating the financial practices and management of two prominent South African sporting bodies: South African Rugby Union ( SARU ) and the South African Football Association ( SAFA ). Committee chairperson Joe McGluwa emphasized the committee's commitment to this oversight during a media briefing on Parliament's priorities for the new year on Thursday.

This announcement comes in the wake of SARU's rebuffed private equity deal, which was rejected by a majority of its affiliated unions. The US-based Ackerley Sports Group is reportedly revising its bid for commercial rights over the Springboks, prompting the committee's interest.McGluwa stated that the committee welcomes further discussions with SARU, but this engagement should extend beyond the private equity deal. He expressed his concern that the proposed deal could potentially create divisions among South Africans and urged SARU to keep the committee informed of its developments. McGluwa also highlighted the committee's intention to delve into the operations at SAFA House, particularly addressing reports of inadequate financial support provided to players during international trips. 'We would like to see what’s happening with the governance. The minister has assisted them financially, but these are the issues to take up with SAFA itself,' McGluwa explained. The committee's scrutiny of both SARU and SAFA reflects a broader effort to ensure transparency and accountability within the country's sporting landscape. McGluwa's statements indicate a proactive approach to addressing concerns raised by affiliated unions and players, emphasizing the committee's role in safeguarding the interests of South African sports
