Lead prosecutor Billy Downer, who Zuma is still trying to remove from the case, listed 13 separate court bids by the former president, complaints to the public protector, and appeals to the NPA amounting to nearly 20 years in delays and counting.
JOHANNESBURG - New papers filed by the State in the Pietermaritzburg High Court reveal that delays in the arms deal corruption case are equal to 239 months, working out to just under 20 years.
The papers were the State's response to a second application brought by former president Jacob Zuma for the removal of lead prosecutor Billy Downer. In the State’s answering affidavit, Downer pointed to Zuma’s “stalingrad tactic”.
Downer also listed the time each one took to wrap up, ranging from months in some cases to years in others. In total it amounted to 239 months of delays and counting, with the application currently before the court “part of [his] strategy”, according to Downer. It also brought a conditional counter-application to have the court step in and bring a stop to what it maintained were the “unreasonable” delays the former president was causing.
