Port Morien resident Lizzie Thomas will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Saturday at the Port Morien Fire Hall. CONTRIBUTEDAug. 2, 1922, marked the date of the death of Alexander Graham Bell at Beinn Breagh in Baddeck. The Canadian Mint is distributing a coin, designed by Chris Gorey of Ingonish, to celebrate Bell’s many achievements. A few months after Bell's death, on Nov. 28, Mary and George Fortune of Dominion welcomed a baby girl and named her Elizabeth.

They raised eight children. Her mother moved in with them to help with the growing family. Her father quickly followed. That many people living in the same house kept them as a tight-knit group. Just imagine being alive for 100 years. I wonder if there are actual birthday cards to mark that significant milestone.

Her daughter, Patricia, came up with a novel way to celebrate the upcoming birthday milestone. In the summer, she painted small rocks and placed them around the community. Lizzie has always been very active in the village. When she moved to Port Morien, her close friend, Joyce Peach, invited her to a meeting of the Port Morien Red Cross. She joined a very involved group of hard-working volunteers. Another group that benefited from Lizzie’s volunteerism was the Women's Auxillary of Branch 55 legion. Lizzie was always willing to help out in the village.
