With South Africa’s increasingly young population and the likelihood of having first-, second- and third-time voters in the 2024 elections, the youth’s lack of the participation in voting is a threat to democracy, experts say. Next year there are national elections in SA, but the youth – estimated at 14 million – seem to be not bothered about registering to vote.
“We are increasingly becoming a young population in South Africa, with a great proportion of the population being under 30 years,” he said.“In this election, there will be a lot of first-time voters who still need to register and show up to vote. What we do not need to see in South Africa is people giving up hope.”
“It’s a threat to democracy when there is that void [of young people not participating in voting]. Lack of participation allows corruption to flourish.”Breakfast said among the reasons young people were not interested in voting was because of the huge unemployment rate among the youth.

'No Justice' for Pro-Democracy eSwatini Protesters Slain in 2021eSwatini authorities have failed to ensure accountability for the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters by security forces that began two years ago, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said. The crackdown led to the deaths of at least 46 people, as well as other serious human rights abuses. Since pro-democracy demonstrations began in May 2021, the government of Eswatini has intensified its clampdown on dissenting views by arresting government critics on bogus charges, interfering with peaceful assembly, and resisting calls for democratic reforms, HRW added. Pro-democracy protests erupted in June 2021 following the mysterious death of 25-year-old law student Thabani Nkomonye who allegedly died at the hands of the police. Over 1,000 people were arrested and the security forces were called in to stamp out dissent. The human rights landscape in Africa's last remaining absolute monarchy remains characterised by serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and repression of pro-democracy activists.
