I don’t believe politics and religion should be banned conversation topics as long as the discussion is respectful, but when things get heated, have cue cards in your head to try to turn things around. Suggestions:
“You’ll never believe who I ran into/texted/found on Facebook!” It doesn’t matter who the person is or even if your guests know who they are. Just pick some random person and once you’re done explaining where you were and how it happened, the situation will be diffused. If you go to your room and close the door when you need a breather, you’ll be either followed or spark conspiracy theories. No one will tell you not to go to the bathroom, so that’ll be your safe space. Bring your ear buds and phone and lock the door. If you need to cry, you can turn on the faucet and you’ll have plenty of toilet paper on hand to dry your cheeks.Stop saying “it’ll be better than last year.
