The Lotus Centre is inviting people to write wishes for the future and remember women lost to violence. They can be placed on a tree in the gazebo to honour their memory. - Chelsey GouldTRURO, N.S. — Looking towards the future, it can be hard to be hopeful about the future when women continue to be treated as lesser against stereotypes and slurs while gender-based violence continues.

The shelter and resource centre covers from most of Mainland Nova Scotia and is seeing the highest numbers since it opened in 1994. So far this fiscal year, 38 women and eight children across ages have been sheltered. There have been 42 women, 72 men and 37 children within each outreach program. “Anti-trans violence has seen a sharp increase this year as well – this is not coincidental when people's rights are up for debate,” said MacLeod. “This creates a culture where hate motivated crimes are commonplace.

Colchester Sexual Assault Centre executive director Jamie Matthews recognized that everyone has a role – including men.
