A Toronto man is facing charges after a suspected hate-motived incident at a mosque in Markham.
York police were called to the Islamic Society of Markham on Denison Street at Middlefield Road around 6:55 a.m. Thursday. Witnesses told police the suspect showed up in a vehicle, drove directly at one of the worshippers and also yelled threats and religious slurs.The mosque itself alleges the man went into the building, proceeded to rip a Qur’an and delivered an Islamophobic rant.Sharan Karunakaran, 28, of Toronto is charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon and dangerous driving.Police are worried there may be other victims and they’re urging them to come forward.
