York Region's Muslim community is reeling following an alleged attack on one of Markham's oldest and largest Muslim institutions.

York Regional Police have made an arrest following the alleged mosque attack where a man is said to have driven his vehicle at worshippers during the Holy month of Ramadan.

It comes following a frightening incident at 6:55 a.m. on April 6 when York Regional Police say a Toronto man, 28, drove at one of the worshippers in the parking lot at the Islamic Society of Markham, on Denison Street, near Steeles Ave. and McCowan Road. He also allegedly yelled threats and religious slurs.

Police did not confirm the allegations made in an Islamic Society of Markham press release that stated the man entered the mosque where he tore a copy of the Qur'an and began a 'racist and Islamophobic rant' directed towards the worshippers. "We further urge YRP to continue investigating this issue as a potentially hate-motivated crime," the release reads."We know that our congregation is a strong and loving community. Our security and logistics team have taken additional steps to keep worshippers safe in the next days of Ramadan."Police said the force is concerned there are other victims and urged people to come forward.
