SYDNEY, N.S. — It didn’t take long for Stacey MacDonald to make a good impression on Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall. On March 6, ...

Brandon Jolie, left, the local co-ordinator of the federal Youth Employment and Skills Strategy program, sits with participant Stacey MacDonald at the mayor’s office where she recently started a 14-week work placement. MacDonald said she is thrilled to be able to work with Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall. “I think so highly of Amanda. I am just in awe when I come in here every day to work.” Chris Connors/Cape Breton PostSYDNEY, N.S.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall said she’s impressed by Stacey MacDonald who recently began a work placement at her office. “This is somebody who is coming into this office for the first time ever with really no background or experience in this type of work environment and is just doing it with such ease.” CAPE BRETON POST - cc“I think so highly of Amanda. I am just in awe when I come in here every day to work.

“So, if they plan on going back to school, I try to figure out what they want to do in school and then I try to find them the best work placement that would give them the best experience for the field that they're trying to get into,” he said. “Being able to say can you go and do research on venues, the different technology and things like that, it’s so great to be able to have somebody who you can delegate a little bit of work but also that little bit of work is really meaningful for her too. It’s good, fun interesting stuff.”

Jolie said unfortunately there can be misconceptions about programs like YESS. However, he said successful placements at the CBRM, the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Horizon Achievement Centre and Highland Arts Theatre are erasing any stigma.
