Developing: Woman in her 70s or 80s killed in unprovoked attack on downtown sidewalk, says Toronto police. A man in his 30s “was taken into custody without incident,” Acting Insp. Craig Young says to reporters outside the scene on Yonge Street.

A woman in her 70s or 80s was killed on Friday morning in a brazen and allegedly unprovoked attack as she walked along the sidewalk in the heart of downtown Toronto, police say.

The woman “sustained serious injuries to her face and head” and died at the scene, Young said, describing her death as a “very tragic occurrence and one of a series of tragic occurrences that have happened in our city recently.” The suspect will be charged with aggravated assault, Young said, explaining that those charges could be upgraded pending the results of an autopsy that will provide more information about how the woman died.
