A winter storm is bearing down on the Avalon and Burin peninsulas with snow and high winds over an extended period of time.

Allison Sheppard, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the snow will begin early tonight and continue right through to the early-morning hours Sunday. The eastern Avalon is in for 30 to 45 cm with the greater amounts in higher terrain; the western and southern areas of the Avalon are expected to get between 15 and 30 cm and the Burin Peninsula and Clarenville areas will see 10 to 20 cm.The rest of the island escapes the brunt of it although it may be stormy at times in the Harbour Breton area.
