Félix Auger-Aliassime weathers the storm to advance at Australian Open. The top-ranked Canadian came back in his second-round match, while Denis Shapovalov won in straight sets and Bianca Andreescu lost in three.
Which he did, by his fingernails, regrouping and rallying Wednesday from 0-2 down in a five-set match for only the second time in his onward-marching career, at the Australian Open.gathered his wits about him — they seemed to have abandoned the 22-year-old from Montreal, along with his shot selection, even his aces-in-the-hole serve — turning the tables and pretty much running the table from the midpoint on against Alex Molcan.
Auger-Aliassime had a 4-3 record in five-setters, compared to Molcan’s 2-0 and the Slovak had beaten the Canadian in their only previous encounter, a year ago in Marrakesh. On top of that, Auger-Aliassime was coming off a close four-set decision 48 hours earlier against compatriot Vasek Pospisil. It had all begun smoothly enough for Auger-Aliassime, who opened the match with a signature ace, adding two more in first two service games. But Molcan proved not remotely intimidated, retaliating with precision and the shot variety Auger-Aliassime was lacking.
Another rainy night too, forcing the cancelling of matches on outer courts and causing many hours of abiding for better weather in the matches that did eventually make it onto the books. Those included a six-hour delay before Bianca Andreescu could get on the hard court for her engagement with qualifier Cristina Bucsa.
