Professional makeup artist Colby Smith shares why the extra step is worth it.
, who works with celebrities like Charli XCX and Dua Lipa, needs two for the undereye area alone because he sections it off. His reasoning: "I pride myself on doing very natural skin," he tells me. "So pinpointing what is needed helps to keep it fresh."
After the video shoot was over, I asked Smith to share the mechanics of his technique. Although it packs an extra step than most people's usual routine, it's a more effective way to disguise dark circles. "This will make your skin look like skin," Smith explains. "There will be less fine lines and dryness under the eye. Also, the skin in that area is delicate, so less is more.
First, he dabs a lighter shade only from the inner corners to the below the pupils with a flat brush. Smith concentrates the brightening hue on this part as it's "where the eye is slightly darker or more purple," he says.
