Liverpool chairman Tom Werner was in attendance at Anfield for the first time since May 2022 on Saturday

On that occasion, on the final day of the 2021/22 Premier League season, a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers wasn’t enough to deliver a second Premier League title in three seasons as Manchester City staged a dramatic second half comeback at Aston Villa to claim the crown.

Werner, Liverpool chairman, wasn’t present at Anfield for the entirety of the 2022/23 season, a campaign where the Reds struggled to rekindle their form from the previous season from the get-go and ended it without lucrative Champions League football, their strong finish at least salvaging fifth place and Europa League football.

Recent months have brought about a sharp refocus. Henry was present for the clash to raise the curtain for the 2023/24 Premier League season, a 1-1 draw at big-spending Chelsea in August. On that occasion Henry, amid the backdrop of a failed attempt to land £111m Moises Caicedo, who would move to Chelsea in the following days for £115m, had more than just the game to attend to.

FSG are almost 13 years into their ownership of Liverpool and 21 into their stewardship at the Boston Red Sox. The last 12 months have been bruising for them on both sides of the Atlantic, with both sets of fans frustrated at a competitive decline and a perceived lack of spending to address the issues that they face, as well as a lack of direction.

FSG don’t have that leadership problem in Liverpool. Klopp, who signed a fresh deal to 2026 last year, has been the single greatest hire in the ownership’s time in sport, delivering silverware back to Anfield and making Liverpool a powerhouse on the global stage, something that FSG have been able to leverage into greater commercial success and an enormous rise in the team’s valuation, which is, ultimately, what Henry, Werner and Co seek to achieve with their sporting investments.
