Twenty\u002Dfive new Canadians raised their right hands and red and white flags in front of a crowd of thousands of Redblacks supporters and took the Oath of Citizenship Thursday night.

The TD Place stadium seats were overflowing with smiles and cheers as these strangers from 15 different countries proudly sang their new national anthem at centre field. Not your typical half-time show.

The judge recalled how proud she was to become a citizen of a country “that respects and protects all rights and freedoms of each and every one of its citizens.” While holding permanent residency, Alatorre and her family began considering citizenship almost three years ago. The COVID-19 pandemic made the process a little longer than expected, but, after almost three years, she and her family are happy about the milestone in their lives.

All 25 candidates were encouraged to take the oath of citizenship in both English and French in the stadium and to sing the national anthem with their fellow Canadians. After two and a half years doing his master’s, da Costa moved to Kingston for work, and he eventually applied for permanent residency in 2018.

Even with long processing times for citizenship, people are still applying and waiting for the opportunity to become Canadian.
