What is the vaccine efficacy of repeated influenza vaccinations? UniMelb Influenza Vaccination

By Bhavana KunkalikarSep 27 2022Reviewed by Aimee Molineux In a recent study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal, researchers calculated the decrease in vaccine effectiveness due to repeated influenza vaccinations.

About the study In the present study, researchers conducted a thorough review and meta-analysis of trials reporting vaccine efficacy by vaccination status from the prior year. The absolute difference in vaccine efficacy between those who received vaccinations during the current and prior seasons and those who received vaccinations solely during the current season was estimated. If inoculated during the current and past seasons and not in the current season, VE more than zero suggests greater vaccine efficacy. By season and age group for each vaccination group, the team calculated pooled vaccine efficacy for influenza A, influenza A, and influenza B.

In 95% of the investigations, reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction was used to detect influenza infection. Among these, 5% of the studies used a rapid diagnostic test. Outpatient settings accounted for 51% of the 83 studies, inpatient for 23%, outpatient and inpatient for 16%, and community settings for 10%.
