Season 1 revealed Wednesday's greatest motivating fear, which contradicted her Addams Family character. Now season 2 needs to remedy this.
Wednesday season 1 revealed the titular character's self-proclaimed worst fear, creating a problem with her hero motivation. The members of the Addams family have always been complicated. Ultimately, Wednesday is more of an antihero than a traditional "good defeats evil" protagonist. However, by making Wednesday's worst fear contradict both her canon character and the person she claims to be in the Netflix series, Wednesday has created a problem that could harm her future.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Part of what makes the Addams family so intriguing is their affinity with all things dark and spooky. They value the occult, death, morbidity, and even murder to an extent that never made much sense. The original comics and movie adaptations were never about cohesiveness - it was only ever about the fun.
Wednesday traditionally loves pain, torture, and chaos, but the Netflix version of Wednesday makes it seem like she is kidding herself about this. By establishing her worst fear is hurting people, the series sets up the idea that Wednesday is far more emotional and caring than she believes, but Wednesday also frequently contradicts this by showing the antihero going out of her way to do "terrible" things.
How Wednesday Season 2 Can Be Faithful To The Original Character Since Wednesday's motivations were muddled in Wednesday season 1, the Netflix series risks running into even more problems down the road. Without a strong foundation for who exactly the character is, the continuity errors will only grow.
Since Wednesday is set in a more realistic world than The Addams Family, where Looney Tunes-style violence can happen without consequences, Wednesday's character cannot possibly align entirely with canon. However, the idea that Wednesday's worst fear is causing other people to be hurt needs to be scrapped.
