Mike Homes Richard Stuart and Wayne Butler chat outside the St. Peter’s By the Sea Community Church in Sandy Point while preparing for a free barbecue as a way to thank the community for support of the historic building. KATHY JOHNSONLOWER SANDY POINT, N.S. — Since 1889, the historic St. Peters By the Sea church building has stood sentential in Sandy Point.

“I was a member of the church and it got to the point where three or four families we’re trying to keep it going and they couldn’t,” recalls Wayne Butler, who serves on the committee. Maintenance and upkeep of the historic building with its original interior still intact – complete with 19 original stained glass windows that came from Montreal at a cost of $9 – has been challenging.

Last year the committee raised a total of $4,000 by raffling off lobsters donated by local fishers and businesses. As a way of saying thank you and giving back to the community, an open house, complete with a free barbecue, donated door prizes, balloon tying and face painting was held at St. Peters on July 9.

“I have lived here year for going on 59 years. I have memories here," he says."When I look at the ladies that are supporting this, I can remember them when I was a kid. They were doing it then. Some of them are 86 years old. They went to this church as little girls."
