The Labour Party leader has reacted to Labour's performance in the 2023 local elections
Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has hailed this month’s local election results in East Lancashire as a step towards winning a general election but admitted there was more to do.
“I’m very pleased with that. Where we made the biggest gains it was because we concentrated on the cost of living. This was a reflection of that being the thing that was uppermost in people’s minds. If you look at Lancashire we made gains in every part of the county. What these results reflect is that we have regained the trust and confidence of voters and that is because we are a changed Labour Party and we are focussing on what matters most to voters which is the cost of living.
“In Lancashire as a whole, in East Lancashire raised living standards is the number one priority. I want people to have money in their pocket, not to have to struggle with the cost of living crisis and that will in itself allow local businesses, high streets, local communities to thrive. Asked if Labour needed to win Hyndburn, Rossendale and Darwen, Burnley and Pendle back from the Tories to form a majority government, Sir Keir said: “Yes we do. That is necessary to form a government but it’s also important as I want a Labour government that truly represents all parts of the United Kingdom including Lancashire. There is also a deeper purpose for me.
