That Dutchman’s Cheese Farm lost four long-time friends during Hurricane Fiona. Margaretha van den Hoek-Field, who manages the farm, is just thankful they didn’t lose more. | SaltWire

The emu pen at That Dutchman's Cheese Farm had trees crash down on it during Hurricane Fiona.lost four long-time friends during Hurricane Fiona. The farm, located in Upper Economy, is best known for its artisanal cheeses and its petting zoo. Scattered around the wooded property are pens with a variety of animals from around the world.

According to Margaretha, the emus had been out in the pen during the storm. While they have only found the remains of two of the four, Margaretha expects the others would have been eaten by coyotes. If a tree had fallen on the shelter, Margaretha said, then the outcome would have most likely been the same. It was impossible for them to tell what would happen. She also brought up the fact emus are naturally more flighty than other animals. If it had been another species, such as the pigs, she believes they would have stayed put in the pen and not have faced the same fate.

“Twenty to 25 years ago, there were people who sunk their life savings into emus. There are all these camps, where people are promised to make tons of money by getting into the hamster business, the chinchilla business, or whatever comes up.
