DR Congo Welcomes Uganda's U.S.$65 Million War Damages PaymentThe Ugandan government has paid U.S.$65 million to the Democratic Republic of Congo in partial payment for war reparations. The International Court of Justice in February 2022, ordered Uganda to pay U.S.$325 million which was only a fraction of the U.S.$$11 billion that the country had sought as reparations for the 1998 to 2003 war - an invasion that left hundreds of thousands of people dead and saw the displacement of mllions. In 2005, the UN court ruled that Uganda had violated international law when it occupied parts of DR Congo's Ituri Rainforest with its troops and also supported other armed groups during the war in the province. This amount includes U.S.$225,000,000 for damages to persons, U.S.$40,000,000 for damage to property, and U.S.$60,000,000 for damage related to natural resources. The total sum is to be paid in annual instalments of U.S$65,000,000, due on September 1 of each year, from 2022 to 2026.
