WATCH: Banyana Banyana coach warns of players' mental wellness, saying they go through a lot
In the wake of a Banyana Banyana star stepping away from the national team to deal with her mental well-being, the team’s assistant coach, Simphiwe 'Shorty' Dludlu, has called on football clubs and institutions to seriously address the mental health of players.edition of the Solomon “Stix” Morewa Soccer Challenge on Wednesday, Dludlu said players and coaches were going through a lot, which could lead to mental stress.
There is so much that they are giving and not getting. A lot of players are abused and have nowhere to go for help. When they make it, they must give back; when they don't, they are told they are nothing; and when they don’t make it, they are compared to their team-mates. The launch was at Clinix Solomon Stix Morewa Memorial Hospital Wellness Centre and Dludlu urged the facility to expand and make space for mental wellness.
