Friday’s job action, which closed Rainbow District School Board, is anticipated to be followed by strike action on Monday in the event CUPE is unable to come to an agreement with the province

The hundreds of protesters who gathered in Sudbury to support education workers on Friday had a simple message: Education workers need more money.

The average wage among education workers, a class which includes such staff as education assistants and custodians, is between $39,000 and $45,000, OPSEU Local 614 president Lise Orsini told Sudbury.com. Rainbow District education assistant Stephanie Lalonde-Robichaud said a wage of $39,000 per year is not enough, “especially with inflation.”

The government originally offered raises of two per cent per year for workers making less than $40,000 and 1.25 per cent for all others. The four-year deal the province is now looking to impose would give 2.5 per cent annual raises to workers making less than $43,000 and a 1.5-per-cent raise for all others.

This legislation operates a notwithstanding clause, which allows them to circumvent the Canadian Rights and Freedoms and make strike action illegal.
