Have you hugged a hemlock tree lately? If not, and you have some nearby hemlock trees that are special to you, you may want to do so, in order to demonstrate to them how special they are to you. | SaltWire

As if the approaching Hemlock Woolly Adelgid isn’t enough of a challenge, Fiona caused the loss of countless hemlock trees in places like Victoria Park, all over the province. This amazing 310-year-old hemlock, which is 36 inches in diameter, was uprooted by the storm and salvaged by the Town of Truro to create special benches to remember what was lost. The Mi’kmaq and later, early settlers, used hemlock products for a variety of medicinal purposes such as helping with digestion, providing vitamin C, building immunity, tonic for the respiratory system, skin irritation wash, an expectorant and an oil for sore muscles and rheumatic pains. Hemlock is not plentiful in Nova Scotia as it only grows in pockets across the landscape since it was over-harvested in previous generations. It tends to be found along rich soils on slopes and ravines, such as in Truro’s much revered Victoria Park, where it is king.

HWA was first discovered in Nova Scotia in 2017 in Yarmouth County, although it had likely arrived several years prior based on the presence of dead and dying hemlocks. Areas of extensive tree decline and mortality are now found throughout the infested region which, includes the following counties: Yarmouth, Shelburne, Digby, Annapolis, and Queens.HWA can cause defoliation, dieback and mortality in as few as four to 10 years, though it can take up to 20 years.
