“Nothing like this obviously ever existed when I played but I would have benefitted from something like this,” said Dartmouth’s Bowie, a former midfielder with Canada’s national women’s team who earned 13 caps and played in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She also played professionally with the Boston Renegades of the U.S. W-League.
Christine Sinclair and former national teammate Diana Matheson are certainly willing to give it a shot. The soccer stars announced last week plans to launch a domestic professional women’s league in 2025, which will include eight teams from across Canada. “I was surprised when the announcement came out when it did,” said Bowie, a 2018 inductee into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame who was an all-Canadian midfielder at Dalhousie and an all-Big East player at the University of Connecticut.
The Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Calgary Foothills Soccer Club have already been confirmed as the first two clubs to join the upstart league.
