Although many people think of hiking as a summer activity, it can be argued that the fall season is actually the best time to be in Nova Scotia's outdoors. | SaltWire
Temperatures, while cooler, are actually far more comfortable if you are walking briskly. The colours and smells of autumn are incredible, and once the leaves disappear from the trees, you often obtain better views on hillsides and slopes. Best of all, there are generally no mosquitoes or black flies. However, this has been an exceptionally warm fall thus far, and I did have mosquitoes biting on Oct. 30, which is quite unusual and will not continue.
Within Truro itself there are usually several hiking options available. Victoria Park, with its deep gorge and Joe Howe waterfall, is a wonderful site to enjoy with the family. The well-developed trail network offers numerous possibilities, both in the lower and upper parts of the park, with additional distance being possible for those who wish to walk or bike around the reservoir and the various Railyard trails.
The two loops of the Thomas Cove Trails in Economy provide eight kilometres of coastal walking and easy strolling through a spruce forest. At low tide, more than 500 metres of red sandstone beach is exposed as the tide retreats into the Minas Basin. About 10 km further toward Parrsboro, Five Islands Provincial Park covers the end of Economy Mountain and is criss-crossed with trails. Hikers can walk the lowlands bordering Beaver Brook or follow the cliff edge of the Red Head Trail.
For those who enjoy walking through hardwood forests, the trails behind the Wentworth Hostel are among the most outstanding in the province. More than 40 km of excellent walking paths are available, and a highly detailed map of the trail system is available. A favourite short hike is the 3.5-km return trip to the exposed rocky slope of the Lookoff. From here the length of the Wentworth Valley is visible, and you have a good view of the trails on the ski hill on the far slope.
