ICYMI: Nova Scotia Power’s commitment to electricity security questioned in Cape Breton | SaltWire

Amir Ahmad, co-owner of Mian’s Restaurant, is concerned about electricity security after the downtown Sydney eatery endured another power outage on Wednesday forcing it to close its doors during the busy supper hour. DAVID JALA/CAPE BRETON POST - David JalaAt least two small business owners in Sydney are questioning Nova Scotia Power’s commitment to its customers after suffering their third power outage in the past six weeks.

Amir Ahmad, co-owner of Mian’s Restaurant – “We would like to know that we won’t have power outages like this in the future.” - David JalaThe latest outages in Cape Breton’s largest community occurred on Wednesday. The first happened just before 3 p.m. and affected about 900 customers. Power was restored around 6 p.m. The second happened at about 4 p.m. and left an estimated 700 north end Sydney customers without power for about four hours.

“It’s already tough to do business in the CBRM where taxes are very high, and now on top of that having power outage situations is very frustrating,” said Amir Ahmad, whose restaurant has become popular with locals for its Indian and Pakistani dishes. “When my power is off, I cannot pay my staff, I can’t put money in my account to pay my bills, I can’t put food on my table for my children,” said MacDonald, who launched his business in 2005 in north end Sydney before moving to his present George Street location.

“The excuses we hear from Nova Scotia Power is that it is too expensive to put them underground, that it’s very complicated. But on the other hand, we’re being told that these Fiona-like storms are going to become more frequent, more intense. So what can Nova Scotia Power do to ensure that the lines that are exposed are not going to be destroyed every time we have a high-wind event?
