Victoria police are warning commuters to avoid a stretch of Avebury Avenue north of the Fernwood neighbourhood due to reports of a gas leak Monday.

FortisBC says crews were called to the 2500-block of Avebury Avenue around 11:30 a.m. for reports of a damaged gas line.

By 12:30 p.m., FortisBC crews were still in the area working on their investigation, according to spokesperson Lauren Lea. Police and firefighters are also at the scene, and part of Bay Street has been closed between Fernwood Road and Forbes Street, according to FortisBC.This is a developing story.
