Another push for backup buyers uneasy about Broadcom buy

Data protection outfit Veeam has confirmed it is to add support for the open source virtualization platform Proxmox, bringing more backing behind the VMware alternative., said it will deliver support for Proxmox Virtual Environment in response to strong demand from its small and medium-sized business customers and service providers.

General availability for Proxmox VE support is expected in Q3 2024, but Veeam said it will show off this new capability live during itsis an open source management environment for enterprise virtualization that integrates the KVM hypervisor and Linux Containers , and provides software-defined storage and networking capabilities.Veeam said it is committed to extending support for new platforms in order to give customers greater freedom of choice.

In addition to those, Veeam currently supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Red Hat Virtualization, plus the AWS, Azure and Google cloud platforms. "This introduction of Proxmox VE support extends our comprehensive data management solution to address the challenges currently faced by our customers as they struggle with hard decisions in order to keep their data safe and protected, and their businesses running," Chief Revenue Officer John Jester said in a statement.

Not surprisingly, the news was warmly welcomed by Proxmox, with CEO Martin Maurer saying:"We are excited that so many customers are making it clear that Proxmox VE is the hypervisor that meets their business objectives."VMware customer reaction to Broadcom may set the future of software licensingVeeam delivering Proxmox VE backup in Veeam Data Platform"further validates and acknowledges customers' demands and desire for data freedom of choice," he added.
