South African teenager Saood Variawa made history as the youngest-ever Dakar stage win ner during stage three of the rally on Tuesday. He navigated the shortened 327 km route between Bisha and Al Henakiyah alongside Frenchman Francois Cazalet, securing his maiden Dakar stage win . Meanwhile, Henk Lategan , the overall leader, extended his lead despite initially slipping back to 21st position. The stage was shortened due to storms, featuring mainly dirt tracks with some gravel and sand.

American Seth Quintero and Dennis Zenz opened the stage fastest in a Gazoo Hilux, followed by Swedes Mattias Ekström and Emil Bergkvist's Ford Raptor and Brazilian Gazoo crew Lucas Moraes and Armand Monleon. Ekström and Moraes then took turns at leading before Variawa moved up to third in a Gazoo 1-2-3. Lategan kept pace with his closest rivals Nasser Al-Attiyah and Edouard Boulanger's Dacia, while Ekstrom moved ahead into second in the virtual general standings. The three Toyotas up front traded the lead with Ekstrom in pursuit. The Mini trio of Guerlain Chicherit and Alex Winocq, Guillaume De Mévius and Mathieu Baumel, Joao Ferreira and Felipe Palmeiro closed in as the crews entered the long penultimate sector
