Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society cancels 2023 event, schedules dissolution vote
The Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society has announced that it will not be moving ahead with producing an event in 2023. Mark Zuberbuhler is the president of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival board. The board is calling for a vote to dissolve the VFMF as an entity on Feb. 1 and the 2023 event is cancelled.While artist’s fees held steady from 2020 levels, Zuberbuhler said that every other aspect of producing the festival increased to the point that operating costs rose more than 40 per cent over the previous year.
Another factor in the decision to cancel 2023 is the change in industry practices that took place during the pandemic. Previously, major events relied on ticket revenues to finance operating costs. Among those artists gracing the stage were legendary blues singer Taj Mahal, alt-rockers the New Pornographers and soul/folk rising star Allison Russell.
