WATCH | Vaal River reopens after extensive cleanup amid Tourism Month celebrations
This follows months of dedicated efforts by officials to remove invasive aquatic weeds and water hyacinth that had overrun the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir earlier this year.
The reopening of the Vaal River is particularly timely as it coincides with Tourism Month, a period dedicated to promoting domestic travel. Guliwe underscored the vital role of tourism in the country's economy.The opening of the Vaal River could not have come at a better time when we are promoting domestic travel. Tourism is important because it is an economic enabler and a key driver for inclusive growth, alleviating poverty, and job creation.
He noted that the clear water and the majority of the water body being free of invasive species were achieved through the support of various stakeholders, including the Vaal River community, Rand Water, and the DWS.
