The Department of Water and Sanitation has opened the boating season on the Vaal River after winning the battle against water hyacinth.

Image: PIXNIOBoaters and recreational enthusiasts gathered at Stonehaven on the Vaal at the weekend to commemorate the milestone and enjoy the pristine waters.

“These invasive species had taken over large areas of the river, choking out native plant life and disrupting the ecosystem. The situation was exacerbated by high levels of pollution in the river catchment, which fuelled the growth of these plants,” the department said. To prevent a reoccurrence of this problem, the department has appointed and funded Rand Water to implement a proactive preventative program.

“Moreover, the improved ecological health of the river will have a positive impact on local businesses that depend on the river for tourism and recreational activities.
