UTSA routs Rice to earn home field in Conference USA championship game
UTSA Roadrunners linebacker Dadrian Taylor celebrates with teammates after he ran in for a touchdown after recovering Rice Owls wide receiver Kobie Campbell’s fumble during the first half of a NCAA college football game at Rice Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022 in Houston.HOUSTON — As UTSA was wrapping up its pregame stretch amid a steady rainfall and mid-40s temperatures at Rice Stadium, linebacker Dadrian Taylor peeled off his warmup shirt and rallied the Roadrunners around him.
UTSA jumped out to a 21-point first-quarter lead and never faltered, securing the regular season title in Conference USA and the right to host the league championship game with a 41-7 win Saturday. With No. 20 Central Florida losing to Navy on Saturday, UTSA moved one step nearer to having a shot at a New Year’s Six bowl berth as the top team from the Group of Five, with No. 21 Tulane, No. 25 Cincinnati and unranked Coastal Carolina likely still a step ahead.
The Roadrunners racked up 21 points in the opening quarter for the second straight week, matching the highest-scoring quarter of the season. With just less than a minute to play in the period, Harris linked up with Franklin for a 5-yard score on a slant to make the margin 21-0.
