Yakosu Umana • The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — With less than a month to go before classes begin, the University of Prince Edward Island is still in need of accommodation for numerous students and is looking for Islanders' help.
“We are receiving a lot of phone calls from students who are upset about the housing problem, and we are doing our best to help them,” said Laura O’Laney, acting director of ancillary services at UPEI. “We try our best to give students a heads up, that they probably need a longer time to find housing and it’s not that easy to find proper housing now,” Wang said. The university is advising international students to not come to P.E.I., if they lack housing, says Jerry Wang, UPEI's director of recruitment and advisement at the school's international student office. According to O’Laney, UPEI had 300-400 students on its accommodation waitlist prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020.
