US surgeon general Vivek Murthy tells i why he is so worried about young people in the UK – and elsewhere – after a research visit

“That presents a real challenge. Because it became clear when talking to them, especially the university students, that their comfort with in-person interaction is diminishing over time, as we have less and less of it. “The US and the UK are dealing with many similar challenges when it comes to happiness and mental health among young people in particular,” Dr Murthy said.

“This isn’t to say that addressing loneliness will solve all of the problems in the world, but it changes how we look at our problems. “That is just fundamentally not true. We’ve got to help reorient our definition of success so that young people see that it can be building healthy and warm relationships in your life and volunteering in your community and helping to lift others up.
