There are several potential projects that could ship liquified gas from Canada’s East Coast to Europe, but none are under construction. Trudeau said the economics of those projects didn’t make sense previously, because of the distance from western Canadian gas fields, but that could be changing as Europe tries to end reliance on Russia.
“Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and other places are going to be essential players in the net zero economy we’re building. The expertise that oil and gas workers have brought to bear in that industry, over the past decades, will be essential.”Article content Scholz said his country will be using natural gas from other sources in the short term, but long term his country will be ending its reliance on all fossil fuels, relying on hydrogen and electrification.
The pair also took questions on a controversial turbine, which Canada recently agreed to return to Russia because it was a needed component in a major pipeline exporting Russian gas to Germany.
