25-year-old Ndumiso Tshegofatso Phiri, known by most as Tron Pyre, is taking the R&B industry by storm
Music in South Africa has come a long way, from the inspiring sounds of jazz greats such as Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba to the early days of kwaito through artists such as Boom Shaka and the late legend Brenda Fassie.
In the past year, women in R&B have been taking over the scene and reinventing the sound in a way that truly remodels the international standard of the genre. Artists such as Elaine, Ipeleng and Joda Kgosi are reviving the genre. And now 25-year-old Ndumiso Tshegofatso Phiri, AKA Tron Pyre, is taking the industry by storm. Born and raised in Soshanguve, Pretoria, Phiri grew up around a lot of music through the church and his family.
His first release was on the music sharing app SoundCloud, but his first demo tape, titled Burgundy, was where it all began. The project featured some of the best musical acts currently on the scene, including Una Rams and hip-hop artist Thato Saul. The song catapulted Phiri’s career, landing him the number one spot on YFM at the time. Since then, he has been on the lips of compilers and music fanatics alike.“I felt limitless, and I’ve been reaching for the stars ever since,” the artist said.
His entrancing voice matches perfectly with the melody-driven track. This song that would fit wonderfully in a calm setting with friends also reminds one of Drake’s Take Care era and allows the listener to sit with their feelings as they take in Phiri’s words.“I treat sound like a playground. I am always trying to see what I can get away with while preserving the integrity of the art and making sense of the times.
