Trent Williams is healthy this time. Last year, he tried to fight through pain in an NFC title game defeat. Now, he has another shot at a Super Bowl berth — and he's hungry to capture a title, writes Lombardihimself.
It didn’t go well. Williams’ lateral movement and anchoring capabilities were severely restricted. He allowed five critical pressures and now, in retrospect, acknowledges that playing wasn’t a good idea. The 49ers suffered a devastating 20-17 loss to the Rams. Their season met a fiery demise.
“Obviously, that game left a sour taste in all of our mouths, especially myself,” Williams said Thursday. “I know I couldn’t control my ankle injury, but I do think if I would’ve tapped out a little earlier, I think I would’ve given my team a better chance to come out on top.” But the zeal that Williams showed in suiting up that day — he was far from the only 49er who fought through pain to play — is worthwhile context for the mulligan that’s come a year later. for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. This next chance, their 20th game of the season, again comes with a Super Bowl berth on the line.
“It’s been a long season, but when you have the pinnacle of the game, which is the Super Bowl, dangling right in your face, the starvation to get there is what’s going to push people through,” Williams said. “It’s going to push people to focus a little harder down the stretch, to treat their bodies right during the week to be ready to go, to play until the whistle.
“I think starvation has a lot to do with that. We’re all starving to win. Everybody wants that ring.”
